Using timeline view to adjust slide and transition time

ProShow Gold, ProShow Producer

Timeline view changes your slide list into a timeline.  This displays your slide thumbnails as smaller images with the width of the thumbnail based on how long the slide and transition time is.  Longer slides and transitions will have longer thumbnails representing the their time on the timeline.

Timeline view gives you the ability to visually adjust the timing of your slides and/or transitions to fine tune the look and feel of your show.

What is Timeline view?

The slide list view is the default view you see for the bottom panel of the software interface. It is what you are used to seeing when dragging and dropping your images into your show, as well as your audio into the soundtrack area.

The Timeline view is just another way of looking at your slide list but displays the slide and transition based on their time in relation to the total time in your entire show.

When in Timeline view you can perform the following actions:

  • Adjust your slide time
  • Adjust your transition time
  • Adjust your slide and transition time together

Adjust your slide time

There are a couple different ways to adjust your slide time when using timeline view.  You can either adjust the slide time within the range of the total time (slide + transition time) or you can expand the total time of the slide by dragging the divider until you reach the desired slide time. Depending on which marker you choose and if you hold the ‘Ctrl’ key on your keyboard when dragging you may see a different change being applied to the slide time.  It’s important to remember any change you make with the timing of your slide can affect other slide and transition times in your show.

To adjust your slide time:

  1. From timeline view, hold down your ‘Ctrl’ key on your keyboard and left-click with your mouse pointer on the marker that divides your slide and transition time. See figure to guide you to the correct markers.
  2. Now drag your mouse pointer left to shorten the slide time or to the right if you want to lengthen your slide time
  3. As you do this you will see the slide length adjust in your timeline without adjusting the transition time.
  4. If you are happy with the total time between slide and transition but want to tweak your slide or transition time without affecting other slide times in your show, let go of the ‘Ctrl’ key and drag your mouse pointer left or right to make your adjustment.
  5. Now let go of your mouse button and your changes are saved.

Adjust your transition time

The transition time can be adjusted using the same method as the slide time.  Depending on which marker you choose and if you hold the ‘Ctrl’ key on your keyboard when dragging you may see a different change being applied to the transition time.  It’s important to remember that adjusting the transition time can also adjust the slide time for the next slide.

To adjust your transition time:

  1. From timeline view, hold down your ‘Ctrl’ key on your keyboard and left-click with your mouse pointer on the marker that divides your slide and transition time.  See figure to guide you to the correct markers.
  2. Now drag your mouse pointer left to shorten the transition time or right if you want to lengthen your transition time.
  3. As you do this you will see the transition length adjust in your timeline.  Keep in mind that when adjusting the transition time you will also be adjusting slide time for the slide to the right of your transition marker.  This happens because the transition is part of the slide and when you take away seconds from the transition time it applies it to the slide in the show.
  4. If you are happy with the total time between the transition and slide time but want to tweak your slide or transition time without affecting other slide times in your show, let go of the ‘Ctrl’ key and drag your mouse pointer left or right to make your adjustment.
  5. Now let go of your mouse button and your changes are saved.

Adjust your slide and transition time

If you need a quick way to adjust the slide and transition time together to a specific point in the show you can use this option to achieve your desired result.  When using this option it gradually increases both the slide and transition time as you drag the marker to the right, or decreases if you drag the marker to the left.

To adjust your slide and transition time:

  1. From timeline view, left-click with your mouse pointer on the marker on the ending time of the transition following the slide that you are trying to extend in your show.  See figure to guide you to the correct marker.
  2. Now drag your mouse pointer left to shorten the slide and transition time and right if you want to lengthen the slide and transition time.
  3. As you do this you will see the slide and transition time adjust in your timeline. Keep in mind that when extending your slide you are pushing all other slides out further along your timeline in the show.
  4. Now let go of your mouse button and your changes are saved.
