Like any application, ProShow only has access to a limited amount of resources on your computer. If ProShow needs to use more memory than it has available, you may receive a notice about being low on memory.

If you receive a message stating that ProShow is low on memory and must close, ProShow has reached a point where it cannot continue operating. After ProShow notifies you about the problem, ProShow will automatically shut down.

What’s Going On?

Under Windows, applications like ProShow are only allowed to use a certain amount of memory. It’s not a restriction specific to ProShow – it’s a general restriction on all applications. However, it’s likely that you don’t have many other applications like ProShow – applications that need to load a ton of images at once to create and play an HD slideshow in real time.

When you work on a slide, ProShow has to load various parts of your content into your computer’s memory. As shows have gotten increasingly complex and photos get higher resolution, it becomes more likely that you’ll run into limited memory issues.

Things You Can Try

In many cases, there is a way to reduce how much memory is needed. Try the methods described below, and see if you’re able to avoid the memory issue.

Make sure your computer has enough memory.

If your computer has less than 4GB of RAM (memory), it may be time for an upgrade. These days, 4GB of memory is considered the bare minimum. If your computer has less than that, most of your applications are going to be running on limited memory. Especially if you’re running Windows Vista or Windows 7, you’ll probably see general improvement in your entire computer just by upgrading the memory.

Look for complicated slides.

Check your show and see if you’ve got complicated slides. Specifically, look for slides or transition effects that use tons of layers. Try removing the worst offenders from your show. While ProShow can handle any number of layers, the memory restrictions Windows places on might mean that your computer can’t handle every situation. Try replacing these complicated slides with a simpler effect.

Try turning off GPU acceleration.

ProShow 5 introduces GPU acceleration, which provides smoother, higher resolution playback by offloading some of the work to your video card. This higher resolution comes with more memory usage. Since ProShow 5 tries to play your show with higher quality, every image you drop into ProShow is used at a higher size. In many cases, it may be 4-5 times bigger than what ProShow 4 would have used.

If you’ve got GPU acceleration turned on, ProShow 5 is using more memory than ProShow 4 would have because it’s necessary to provide you with the higher quality.

Turn off GPU acceleration in the Preferences to switch back to the way ProShow 4 rendered your show. You might see a drop in playback quality (it will match what you’re used to from ProShow 4), but it also might reduce the memory needs enough to get you through.

To turn off GPU acceleration:

From the Edit menu in ProShow 5, choose Preferences.

Select the Playback category on the left of the Preferences window.

Uncheck Automatically configure GPU acceleration….

Uncheck Enable GPU accelerated playback.

Uncheck Enable GPU accelerated previews.

Click Done, and restart ProShow.

Software piracy, whether intentional or accidental, is a serious issue. Photodex takes software piracy very seriously, and offers an amnesty program to help get users legally licensed.

Software Piracy is Illegal

Using software without a proper license is theft. Even when the unlicensed use is accidental, it is still a serious issue. Using unlicensed software can open you and your company to serious legal issues. The only way to avoid these issues is to properly license your software.

While some people knowingly use pirated software, sometimes unlicensed use isn’t intentional. Often there are simply misunderstandings about what constitutes illegal use. Sometimes the installation was performed by a third party. Even in these cases, however, you are still responsible for the software you use on your computer.

Examples of unlicensed, illegal or improper use:

Using a registration key that was issued to someone else.

Using a registration key you found on the internet.

Using any kind of software patch, add-on, hack, or key generator that alters how ProShow works.

Installing the software on more computers than is allowed by your license.

Using a copy of the software purchased from an unlicensed vendor, including eBay. (ProShow is not sold through third parties, and cannot be resold. If you purchased it from anyone other than Photodex, it is likely not legal.)

Getting Legal is Quick and Easy

Fortunately, getting legal with your ProShow license is quick and easy. Just purchase a valid license for the current version from Photodex. Once your order is processed, print a copy of your receipt and keep it in a safe place. Once you are properly licensed and no longer using the software illegally, you won’t be risking further action.

If You Believe You Are Using the Software Legally

If you’re seeing notices about illegal use while using ProShow and you believe that you are properly licensed, please contact us. Give us a call, and we’ll help to get everything straightened out. Be sure to have your registration information handy.

Q. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHANGES FOR PROSHOW 5?

A. ProShow 5 represents one of the most important development changes over the last three years. It represents a leap forward in many ways by refocusing ProShow on modern slideshow creation, including both instant effects driven shows and fully customized productions. Please review the associated What’s New Guide that outlines the many new features incorporated into the release.

Q: HOW DID YOU CHOOSE WHAT NEW FEATURES TO ADD TO PROSHOW 5?

A: We started by reviewing feedback and requests submitted by you, the user. We chose items to address based on a number of factors including how often they were requested, how big of an impact they would have and what potential side effects may result. Overall in ProShow 5, we’ve made hundreds of enhancements with a goal to help new users and ProShow veterans alike.

Q: WHY DID YOU CHANGE THE UI (USER INTERFACE) FOR PROSHOW 5?

A: Desktop software is constantly evolving. Over the years, how we interact with software has changed dramatically. With every major update to ProShow, we have the ability to improve the user experience. Most of the changes were based on feedback from users. As ProShow has grown over the years, it has been a balancing act to add more features while keeping the UI as simple and functional as possible. With users that range from casual consumers to advanced video professionals, ProShow’s UI has to work well for everyone.

For example, in ProShow 5, you just click on the element you want to change in the navigation panel, fewer tabs means fewer clicks, and working on a slide gets a whole lot easier. Many of our other changes stemmed from adding power while trying to reduce complexity.

A major UI overhaul can take some getting used to, which is why we only make this kind of change every few years. Once you get acquainted with the new interface in ProShow 5, you’ll never want to go back.

Q: HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M ELIGIBLE FOR A FREE UPGRADE TO PROSHOW 5?

A: You are eligible for one year of free upgrades from the date of your ProShow purchase. Just download ProShow and the upgrade will install automatically. If it has been more than a year, there is an option to purchase an upgrade.

If you need to request your registration key information you can do so one of two ways:

Access your registration key information online by visiting Your Products

Contact Us and we can help you retrieve your registration key.

If you’re not sure about your eligibility, just download and start the installation process. ProShow 5 will let you know if you’re eligible for a free upgrade automatically.

Q: IS PROSHOW 5 AVAILABLE FOR THE MAC?

A: ProShow 5 is a Windows application. We understand that Mac enthusiasts want to use our software natively without having to install Windows; however, our current development efforts and investment in the ProShow infrastructure are still focused on Windows.

Please know that feedback on this topic is taken seriously and generates considerable internal discussion. We definitely see a native Mac version being an option in the future. For now ProShow can be run on Mac using tools like VMWare Fusion (where you don’t even have to see Windows) and we offer a Mac compatible slideshow tool with our ProShow Web service.

Q: WHY DOES MY COMPUTER HAVE TO BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET TO REGISTER PROSHOW 5?

A: ProShow 5 requires online activation in order to register the software. It’s quick and simple – just enter your registration key and ProShow quickly checks it against our online database.

Q: CAN I TRY PROSHOW 5 FREE?

A. Yes, you can download and try ProShow 5 for free for 15 days. The trial is fully functional, the only limitation is a small yellow ‘trial’ banner across any output. The banner is removed from any slideshow you create once you purchase a registration for the software.

Q. WILL PROSHOW 4 STILL BE SUPPORTED?

A: Yes, at Photodex we support all versions of our software. Plus, we’re open 7-days a week to take your call or email if you have any questions, comments or concerns.
